Life on health

AHH FRIDAY.

This week has been a doozy. It seriously went by so fast. I had to present a case study on dysphagia in class last night, so I spent many nights/early mornings working on it this week. The presentation went well (thankfully).

I haven’t had a ton of brain power for finishing some of the more thoughtful posts I’ve been working on, but I did see this fun little survey floating around. Here’s a little bit more about me and snippets of what I consider my healthy life!

healthy living survey

1. What did you eat for breakfast today?

Pear and chia baked oatmeal with sunbutter & coffee! I have this recipe coming to you next week. It fed me four mornings in a row!

2. How much water do you drink each day?

I’d say around 8-10 cups of water, probably. I’ve tried keeping count before, but I always lose track. When I am doing poorly at staying hydrated, I’ll often drink soda water or use crystal light to help.

3. What is your current favorite workout?

The one I actually do? Lol. After hurting my toe and then getting crazy swamped with school, I am lucky to get a little barbell action in during the evening.

I do, however, love interval workouts, because I don’t get bored! Always hiking in beautiful weather will always be #1.

4. How many calories do you eat each day?

Are we talking a week day or a weekend day? đŸ˜‰ Probably between 2000-2250, but I don’t count. I do my best to listen to my body.

5. What are your favorite healthy snacks?

I often enjoy homemade baked goods for snacks which I love with a glass of cold almond milk. I find sweet/salty mixes to be very satisfying too – nuts and raisins, banana and peanut butter, and pineapples and cottage cheese.

6. What do you usually eat for lunch?

Lunches are usually packed and I often have leftovers from the night before. I also like having homemade pasta salads, slaws, and tuna salads.

7. What is your favourite body part to train?

Glutes! I still have high hopes for my tush đŸ˜‰

8. What is your least favorite body part to train?

Abs- not the core stability stuff, but the ones where my neck feels like it is on fire trying to keeping off the ground.

9. What are your ‘bad’ food cravings?

Like most everyone else who’s completed this survey, I don’t refer to food as bad/good. My cravings for dining out are probably bad for my wallet!

9. What are some of your favorite treats?

Fresh watermelon, fancy coffee drinks, restaurant cooked salmon, fries, s’mores, chewy brownies, ice cream cones, & baked brie (that’s #1)

10. Do you take daily vitamins or supplements?

No I can never remember to stay on a regimen! Plus, I am a believer in food first!

11. How often do you eat out?

About once a week. I cook pretty much every night, but I usually have a date night or dinner with friends about once a week, sometimes less.

12. Do you eat fast food?

Well, since I don’t eat out that much, when I do eat out that’s not my 1st choice. I will eat fast food on road trips. I love Taco Bell’s bean burrito!

13. Who is your biggest supporter?

Terry and my parents. I can 100% count on them every single time.

unnamed (35)

14. Do you have a gym membership?

Lucky for me, as a student I get to use my school’s gym. It is actually a really nice one that even offers classes!

15. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?

This past week has been about 6 hours. Ideally I’d have 8 and I usually try to shoot for at least 7, but school has just been kind of crazy lately! I do really really love sleep though.

16. Do you have a cheat day?

Terry and I aren’t really into the idea of an open marriage. So no, I don’t have a cheat day.

17. Do you drink alcohol?

No, I don’t. Terry and I just aren’t really interested in it.

18. Do you have a workout buddy?

Not at the moment. It would be helpful if I did? Has anyone had success in getting their significant other to enjoy exercise?

19. What’s the best thing that’s changed about your life since committing to a healthy lifestyle?

It is all about how I’ve learned to define health. For me health takes into consideration all aspects of being and requires a delicate balance of health promoting behaviors and a love for living. Learning to let those two things coincide has been monumental.

20. What’s the last healthy thing you did?

I went out to dinner with friends/classmates after a long week of classes and we shared a lot of laughter. It was the perfect way to end the school week.

I am going to a retreat this weekend with my mom, so I am excited to have some quiet time. I will definitely have to work on school stuff, but it will all be in a serene, relaxing setting. Can’t wait to share about it with you!

What healthy habit has made the most impact on your life?

  1. While reading your answers, I found myself nodding along with almost all of them! Your response to the cheat day made me laugh out loud!!
Living a healthy life is all about balance. I think the biggest part of it for me is being okay with it when the pendulum swings too far in the unhealthy direction for a little while.
I hope you have a great time at the retreat this weekend with your mama!

    1. HAha I’m glad you could appreciate my open marriage joke đŸ˜‰
I totally understand what you mean about not being too hard on yourself. I feel that way often, but I do my best to correct those thoughts and not dwell on them.

  2. Really enjoyed reading this and getting to know you a little better. I agree with many – the fancy coffees, love for hiking, sweet&salty… mmm. You are a wonderful advocate for what health truly means, and always express it in a way where I can see the joy it is bringing you in every word! Can’t wait for the oatmeal recipe – heart pears!

  3. I love reading this. I tried to do something similar for today’s post too – get to know the reader a little more. I’m glad you got to go out with classmates last night after a long week, and I hope you have an awesome time on your retreat!

      1. I took my nutrition intro class at Winthrop, and almost went there for grad school, since it would have been much closer to my husband. Small world đŸ™‚ We should grab coffee sometime!

  4. I very much agree that your blog demonstrates SUCH a balanced approach and I am so glad for that influence in my life! I so feel you on the neck pain during ab workouts! Also BAKED BRIE – it has been tooooo long. Hope you and your mom have the best weekend đŸ™‚

    1. You don’t even know how much I adore baked brie, but it is such a rare treat! It would totally be my last meal.
Thank you for the nice compliment. I’m so glad that what I value can be seen in me!

  5. Love this survey! I want to take it for my blog – you may see it soon :). I think the healthy habit that’s made the biggest impact on my life is understanding the right kind of fuel I need for my body. And trying to get veggies and fruits in at every meal!

  6. Girl I just love you! And we have a ridiculous amount in common – leftovers for lunch, dining out around once a week, cooking every night and aiming for 8 hours of sleep and only getting 6. It isn’t easy to be a healthy student! I absolutely adore how BALANCED your life is – and how a couple missed workouts don’t bother you. I haven’t had s’mores before but we love the same treats aside from that: OMG chewy brownies.
